SJLS has adopted a curriculum that is standards based. The school currently has curriculum that follows California state standards in language arts and science and national standards in math and social studies.

SJLS professional staff relies upon research-based knowledge about teaching and learning by implementing the following classroom strategies:

• Differentiating instruction using support and challenge aspects within the standards-based curriculum.
• Using ongoing assessment strategies such as benchmark and theme testing, portfolios, and teacher observations which demonstrate how individual learning needs are met.
• Accepting and utilizing IEP programs
• Students are challenged within the classroom using materials provided by the Standards-based curriculum.
• SJLS has implemented a new technology lab which allows teachers to utilize curriculum based materials available on the Internet to enhance and re-teach material. Currently, SJLS students in Kindergarten through Eighth Grade utilize the computer lab weekly on a scheduled basis by classroom. Teachers and student mentors work with classes to complete project based assignments as well as practice computer skills.

SJLS creates student portfolios in each classroom containing examples of critical and creative thinking, problem solving, knowledge attainment, and application skills. Students are encouraged to think and solve problems through creative processes that include hands-on learning, special projects, cooperative groups, field trips, and special guest speakers.

Students demonstrate their abilities in these critical areas by writing, researching, and speaking about the skills learned and then how they can apply and attain such skills as well.

A mentoring program by middle school students has been implemented and is providing much needed assistance to Elementary students as well as leadership experience for Middle School students.
